Yoshi was very into the Rock-paper-scissors game today, it's almost like singing a song instead. And I just taught him the Cantonese version. But not till today, that I wonder, what does 清斟和教叉燒包 really mean?? (can anyone tell me?) ^_^

Above the plane, Yoshi drew something that I have never seen before. He said :"Otousan driving his car".......And just now, I grabbed the actualy drawing, because me and Nori noticed the cartoon character was drinking something while driving..... Nori said it must be a coke, because that's what he did when two of them went out golfing and lunch afterwards..... I got to ask Yoshi tomorrow morning....how cute~~

Red pocket

This past Chinese New Year, for the first time, we gave Yoshi a "special" red envelope/ pocket. In the past, we would just give them, then put those back in bank. But this year, he's old enough to understand the concept, so we gave him one additional red envelope with $1 inside. He was very excited about it.

After keeping that underneath his pillow for more than 15 days, I took him to the store and pick his own toy. It was very special to him. (Kiharu didn't get her $1 red envelope, as she is still young to understand)

Golf lesson......by Yoshi

After dinner, while Yoshi & Kiharu were playing golf, I noticed the "teaching language" had switched from Cantonese to Japanese......perhaps because that's how Yoshi was being taught at the first place. (Nori, you should be very proud).

Potty "trainer"

No, we have not start potty training with Kiharu yet (grandma, we are saving that job for you again this summer at YOUR house ^_^). As many people suggested, younger siblings tend to learn things much faster as they copy the older ones on everything, including bathroom visit...

This afternoon, suddenly Kiharu was pointing to her pants and said she wanted to poop, which normally she would have just quietly done it behind the scene. Yoshi heard it, and said "Kiharu, let's go to bathroom, I will help you." Of course, I followed them right behind (who knows what Yoshi meant by "teaching").

Yoshi pulled out the hidden potty training seat, set it up on the toilet for Kiharu. She was very willing to try it. One wanted to teach, and one wanted to learn, so my instant thought was "Camera!!"

They were very cute in the bathroom. Yoshi was very patient with her. He even checked for any result. ^_^ Though at the end, nothing happened. But it was a big accomplishment to both of their efforts.

Great friends- English channel

One of the concern I had at the beginning of school year, was Yoshi's class size has increased from 6 kids to 14 kids. He's the only non-English speaker. But very soon, I realized with such wonderful teachers, it made his transition so much easier to handle. And most importantly, he and his classmates get along very well. Though Yoshi has limited English volcabularies, but he's never shy to speak to other kids or participate in any class activities. And many times, I would hear him speaking new words that I never knew he has learnt. At age 4, he's really like a sponge, absorbing every new languages he hears, and being able to separate them and use in right time.

For a long time, Yoshi has been asking if he could invite his friends over to play, and finally, we got a chance. We invited a few yesterday, and the boys have so much fun together. So glad to see they enjoyed each other's friendship.

Bedtime struggle

Kiharu has been very independent and easy when it comes to bed time. The last year, I could just say good night and walk out the room. But the last few days, don't know exactly why, the minute I walked out the bedroom, she would just cry. She would be standing by the bed corner (almost like waiting at the bus stop), cry till someone show up. She just want me to stay with her. I tried many things, talking to her, brought her a new blanket, wait a little bit, or even let her cry till she fell asleep on her own. I tried to be patience, yet not wanting to become a habbit to sit by her bedside. This happens during day time nap too.....

Yesterday, Yoshi volunteered to be the comforting person. He was so kind to her. I was listening outside. He said "Ki-chan, don't cry, we are here. I will stay with you a little bit....." then as soon as he walked out the room, she cried. Back and forth many times, he had so much patience. But at some point, I heard his tone changed "Ki-chan, why are u crying so much, don't cry!!!".... ^_^

Later on, Yoshi pulled the chair by her bedside, hoping to stay with her by pretending to sleep. It was quite funny.

Well....as long as Yoshi was in the room, she wouldn't want to sleep. So we ended up walking away, and let the little girl cry till she fell asleep on her own. (luckily the TV monitor has the "mute" button....)

Bath tub upgrade

Nori's idea of using the baby bathtub as Ofuro hottub was a successful hit to the kids. They LOVE the weekend activity. But the baby tub is way too small.....

No worry, Nori has taken care of it. The solution---- "a bigger plastic container". ^_^......except, it's clear color, so everything is "see through"...hee hee...^_^

Kiharu 2nd birthday party

Yesterday we had Kiharu's birthday party at home. We invited a few friends over to celebrate. At 2 yrs old, Kiharu sure knew that's a party for her. Thanks everyone for coming. Hope u did have lots of "strawberries" fun. (& thank you everyone who have sent in your birthday wishes from everywhere, you have all made this little girl feel very special. Thank you)

Every year at both Yoshi & Kiharu's birthday parties, I would prepare a list of questions, whoever have the most correct answers would win a prize. ^_^ (I will reveal the answers in a few days here for you)

Ringtone... money well spent!!

Everytime when I call my friend, we always hear the ringtone on the phone while waiting for her to pick up the call. The kids LOVE the music so much that we actually don't really want my friend to pick up the call. The favorite part was to be connected to her voice mail, so we could hang up and redial the same phone number again (& again), just to hear the music. Yes, as you might think, why not turning on the radio instead..... but since my friend has paid monthly fee for the ringtone function, why not making sure her money well spent.......^_^ Thanks May EE.

Today is Kiharu's birthday. We sang so many times birthday song that Kiharu knew it's for her. Can't believe she is already 2 years old. Here are few things about this little girl-

- You are always a happy girl (most of the time). You have lots of silly laughs.

- I love seeing you dance, moving your shoulders up and down with the music beats.

- You and your brother are great buddies. Even with fighting, always ended with hugs and sorry, then things would be back to normal again. Did I tell you, you shouldn't always start the argument by grabbing Yoshi's stuff, and immediately ran the opposite direction, I saw it all.

- Every time when Yoshi's teacher opens the classroom door, the first one who runs in is YOU!! ( I know you miss Yoshi a lot while he's away)

- I can't believe you have recently started to show me what u want to wear or not. There were times you refused to wear certain clothes, and kept pointing to the others. I know you are a girl, but I really can't let you win this battle, as I can foresee what will be coming up soon.....

- Whenever Yoshi came to me and complaint about something, you were always right behind, filing the same complaint, making sure your voice being heard.

- Unlike your brother when he's little, you never seem to be intimated by my louder voice, or my angry look, or even my silent strategy. You just seem to have your own mind set going.

- You have started to say some words: "No....No....(in English)" hm....wonder where u learned this from..... "早晨 (good morning) 廁所(toilet) 抱(carry me) 唔該(thank you) 要(want)" ... "Arigatou (thank you) Chi gau chi gau (no no...) "

Kiharu, every little thing about you always amazes me and Otousan. We enjoy seeing how much you and Yoshi love each other. Their favorite time- Ofuro (bath time)

The favorite time for the kids got to be weekend. Not only because Nori is here with us, lots of playtime together, but the highlight must be the shower time. In Japanese culture, "ofuro" (bathing in tub) is an everyday thing. We do have a bathtub here, but it's sort of big which requires much more water to fill up. So Nori came up with a better idea using the baby bathtub. I can't do this in weekday as it is hard to handle both kids in and out the bathtub at the same time. I only give them shower time. So I guess, they have to wait for another 5 days before getting to sit inside the little tub. ^_^

We didn't go anywhere today. So I tried to do some creative thing with Yoshi during Kiharu's nap time.

Fingerprint art- it's very easy and fun. I should borrow the book from library to get more ideas.

Ojiichan and Obaachan got this drawing book for Yoshi. It teaches kids how to draw simple shapes. I always know Yoshi has lots of interest in music. But I think drawing is not (yet) his talent perhaps. But he's still trying, and it's fun doing it with him. I just found it very funny with his artwork....hee hee.......cute no matter what they look like. ^_^

Happy new year everyone. Can't believe it's 2012. The last few months went by so fast, we just took down all our Christmas decoration in the house today, everywhere seems very empty. After a long week of holiday vacation, Nori will be back to work tomorrow. I'm starting to have the "separation anxiety" ^_^

We just had the first (light) snow accumulation today. Not much on the ground, but good enough for the kids to have their first snow fun of the year.

Mini road trip

Today, we took a mini road trip (1 an half hr drive) up north to Columbus, OH to visit an old friend. It's been 10 years since meeting, and now we all have our own kids. Wish we live much closer together, so Yoshi & Towa-chan could get together more often, they seemed to get along very well, tons of fun. Hope we can meet up again soon.

We bought these candy filled microphone toy, $0.90 each, money well spent. They kept the kids entertained on the way back. They didn't even know what's inside those toys. They were just too concentrated with the karaoke party...^_^

So Santa did come to visit us on 25th. He brought lots of presents for everyone. But most importantly, he brought lots of excitment, fun & imagination into our house. It was such a fun experience. More to share later. Here are photos to capture this year's Christmas day. Ho Ho Ho....(thank you Santa & thank you everyone who sent in your holiday wishes, cards and presents. We are very blessed.)

Santa's gifts were "specially" being wrapped bright gold color, with a special message to the kids.

Even after opening the presents, Yoshi enjoyed starring at the packaging box. Maybe I should just order more of those empty boxes instead....

This year Christmas is so much fun. It's the first time that Yoshi truely understand the concept of Santa and his reindeer team. It makes the christmas much more fun to prepare for.

Before bedtime, the kids saw all the presents from us to them. Will bring out the grandparents one tomorrow. Wonder, will Santa come by tonight and bring extra ones? Ho Ho Ho!!!

The last holiday project

Finally, the last (minute) project of this holiday is done. YEAH! It was a lot of fun, I truely love working with felt materials and the hot glue gun....

(Rafael, thanks for your mom's inspiration, I let Yoshi helped me out for few stitches as well)

If u are wondering, this set of trains was from those toy capsule in Hong Kong during our last trip. I got Yoshi's approval to use on stocking designs ^_^

Today, we invited Ethan and auntie Poki over for a cookie party. It was a lot of fun for the boys (& moms)

So now, stockings are done. Cookies are baked. We are ready for Santa Clause to come. Ho Ho Ho!!! (Happy Holidays to all of you)

The other day, I asked Yoshi to write a letter (more of drawing) to Santa, telling him what he wants for x'mas. Luckily, he asked for the thing that is already on Santa's list. ^_^ This was his first communication to Santa. He even put on a stamp for mailing. Well, all I can say is Nori took the mail and it went straight to Santa. ^_^

After 2 days, Santa REPLIED!!!!!! Yes, he did. He replied with a video message to Yoshi. (Thanks Vanessa for introducing this communication tool ^_^ hee hee.....)

Old fashion mail

One of my favorite Christmas is sending and receiving Christmas cards. Everyday, I look forward to checking the mailbox, as I know it's not just bills or junk mail, but fill with warm wishes from friends and families. Hanging those up for display is also fun for the kids too. Sometimes they would just starr at each photos, trying to recognize their friends. Last week, we had a holiday dinner with our friends, and the kids received & opened their presents early. My friend Nora was thoughtful enough to get different toys for them- a mini doll house and a puzzle. Obviously those were meant to be for different gender interest. But who really decide that except the kids themselves, and perhaps, there are exceptions.......

Afterall, Yoshi was more into the puzzle (good!!) and finished it very soon.

Well, I guess since puzzle was done, time to get back to the other new item..

Well, it became official that I'm the only one who don't like natto gohan (Japanese bean rice). Yoshi has always enjoy eating that. Kiharu has recently tried it and shows NO sign of hesitation. As for me.......I still cannot get past the smell of those tiny beans..... so "NO thank you. You can all share without me!!"

"I like Santa Clause" ("我好鍾意聖誕老人")

As part of this year's Christmas adventure with Yoshi, I took the kids to see Santa Clause last Friday evening. There was this "Santa visit" event at the nearby firehouse. The money charged for photo taking will be donated back to the firehouse.

When we left the house, I wasn't quite sure how to explain this whole Santa clause thing to Yoshi. All I said was, we are going to see Santa. I told him he's coming by this area to visit kids, but only taking photos, and he will be back on 25th to drop off presents. (assuming, there is only ONE Santa, who ran around the world........^_^)

When we got to the firehouse, there was already a long line of kids waiting for photos. Yoshi & Kiharu were just following other kids. From far away, they were checking out Santa, starring at other kids, hanging out, just like normal. Finally it's their turn. Yoshi was very willing to sit on Santa's lap (I gave him advance notice while waiting). V.s. Kiharu wouldn't even want to have anything to do with this old guy covered with long white beard........

After the visit, Yoshi said "我好鍾意聖誕老人" ("I like Santa Clause").

24 days to Christmas

Now that we have introduce Mr. Santa to Yoshi, he's been asking if tomorrow is Christmas day. So I have decided to make this calendar for him, a good way to teach numbers and the idea of waiting for the big excitment. This morning, after putting a santa inside the first pocket, he asked "I want to put another one...". I'm sure it's not fun seeing rows of empty pockets before the 25th one.....Yoshi, you got to be patient!! ^_^
p.s- this is such a therapeutic project, I love working with felt materials, just wish to have more time to do so.....

Holiday is coming to town

We just had a long Thanksgiving holiday this past weekend, totally spoiled having Nori home with us for 4 days straight. I almost had (or I did have) a Monday anxiety at the end..... Besides having wonderful dinners with friends (Thanks Wendy & Nora family), we also put up the Christmas Tree. Last year, Kiharu was bearly able to walk, but now, she was a great Santa's little helper.

This year, we are going to introduce Mr. Santa (& his team) to Yoshi. It's going to be an interesting concept. Though I have only told him little bit, but he's been already asking if "tomorrow" is Christmas?! He did ask where does Santa live? and if we could call him on the phone?!

Look forward to share more about this holiday with him, and I'm sure lots of funny stories will come out from him.

Mrs. Santa is busy creating a calendar, so eventually Yoshi can start his own Christmas count down..... Ho Ho Ho!!

Pajamas

I always worry about the kids in the middle of the night, because they both dislike having any blankets wrap around their bodies (which I know most kids are the same). So particularly in the winter time, I found myself waking up few times to check on them.

To stop that sleepless cycle, I decided to get new pajamas for the kids. When Yoshi saw the one piece outfit, he wanted one too. Now, I can get some good sleep, and they both have lots of fun every night after bathtime. The only challenge is, Yoshi has a difficult time getting off that pajama by himself......especially when he needs to RUSH to bathroom in the morning........(never thought about that before).

Music Hall

Can't believe Christmas is right around the corner, Thanksgiving holiday is this weekend. There are so much going on lately, just not enough time. ......

Anyway, two weekends ago, we took the kids to attend a kids event organized by Cincinnati Orchestra Symphony. This was the second time we attended at the Music Hall. It was a short 40 minutes performance, but good enough for the little ones. They both enjoyed the music.

Only wish, it would have been a quick clean up, rather than a 15 mins activity, during the bedtime rush hour......

Spaces between the mess

This evening, the kids had decided to dump out all the toys from the bins, so they can use the bins as sitting tools. I tried not to look at the mess (headache), as long as they are not bothering my cooking.

Later on, Yoshi asked to watch a video before dinner, I told him he needs to clean up, there is no place for them to sit anyway. So guess what, two of them managed to push the toys away, so to clear a path to the sofa, and two (perfect) spots for them to sit. Then said "Mama, see now we can sit. We will clean up the toys after dinner." (smart kids). Well, in order to finish up my cooking, I agree to that negotiation. And my agreement was "if you don't clean up after dinner, all the toys will be donated to other kids....". Let's see.....

The diary of brother and sister

Nov 10th diary- While preparing dinner, heard little argument over the play area, then followed by Yoshi's screaming with his finger holding up. "Kiharu bite my finger" I was in disbelieve till I saw the teeth mark (not "tooth"). Poor guy. He was crying (with shock). Kiharu didn't seem to think it was that bad, till she saw her brother crying hysterically....then she cried. After apologizing, hugging and kissing (typical demand from victim in our house), things went back to normal.

Nov 11th diary- Yoshi is always very protective with his trains. (& Kiharu never seems to understand that point...of course, she is only 1 yr old). But tonight, with Yoshi's good mood and Kiharu's good behavior (in front of train station), I tried something new. I told Yoshi to let Kiharu participate with the train conducting. And I told Kiharu she needs to "ask for permission" before touching (anything). After few attempts, seems like it's working (so far). The conversation went like this:

Yoshi: "Kiharu, ask me (for permission)"
Kiharu: "May I? (in Japanese)"
Yoshi: "Yes, you may (in Japanese)"
then suppose Kiharu should thank Yoshi afterwards, but she always forgets, so...
Yoshi: "Kiharu, say thank you (to me)"

Home bakery

I grow up playing with dolls, pretend cooking, pretend haircut with my mom or board games with family..... I'm certainly not good in pushing toy cars in circles, or flying planes around the house, or holding cardboard box pretend moving train......no, they don't require specific skills, but lots of patience & routine physical movement..... With Yoshi, I realized cooking is one of the most enjoyable learning activities. (prefer during Kiharu's nap time though).

Yesterday, I was off the schedule, so we ended up doing the bakery with the little helper (for the first time). The first thing I did was to give her a small dough, kept her busy to start with. It took her a little while to feel comfortable in playing with that mushy texture. I did spot "someone" trying to taste the dough & the dry fruit ingredient....

Yoshi was in charge of the sweet bun (with dry blueberry), I was in charge of the salty one, and Kiharu..........let's just say she dropped her (only) dough on the floor.......

Halloween Parade

Yesterday, we took the kids to a Halloween Parade (in Hyde Park). Since grandma had spent so much time sewing the costumes, it would be fun to wear more than once (while the sun was out too).

This was Kiharu's first time trick or treating, it didn't take her too long to warm up with the idea of getting "something" and put into her bucket.

Each kids who walk at the parade were assigned with a number for costume contest, it was really fun.

Thank you grandma PoPo for making the costumes, the kids had so much fun. Tomorrow night will be another fun trick or treating around the neighbourhood. Happy Halloween.

Sibling love

After being together for almost 22 months, I am starting to see Yoshi & Kiharu truely enjoy each other's company.

Yoshi is much more willing to share everything (the train station is still a highly sensitive territority, but allow visitor with caution ^_^). He would also say "Ki-chan, play with me", almost as if he begs her to play with him. (He would be sad if she doesn't response)...... He also protects her like a big brother in front of strangers. He would make sure I don't forget about Kiharu when we were buying snacks or simply getting a sticker at the grocery check out counter. He would ask about her when she's not around.

As for Kiharu, she is much more expressive with emotions and wordings. She could make a few words (water, hurt, body parts, "brother", "mama", "Otousan", grandparents...) or she would shake her head to let you know what means NO. She would point at things she want to get or to do. She understands much more than we think.

They love having each other. They would make silly laughs, silly sounds & dance together. They would shout at each other, grabbing things from each other, but they would also apologize, hug and kiss each other to make up. Even when they take turn to get shower in the bathroom, they would wave to each other (as one steps into the tub & the other one wait outside). They would clap hands to encourage each other during mealtime.......

Being parents, it's very comforting to know they love each other. It took a while to get to this stage, there were struggles and patiences from everyone. We look forward to many more of their sweet moment together.... xoxo

The other day while cooking, I saw these quiet moment.......Yoshi was trying to put a hairclip on Kiharu's hair. Not only was Kiharu laying still, she seems VERY comfortable (while I was worrying if he would poke her head with the sharp hairclip, but I just sat back and enjoy watching them, let them figure out on their own)

Yoshi's has a Pajama Day at school, he was so looking forward to that. He couldn't believe he could wear his PJ to school ^_^ Students brought their pillow, blanket, stuff animal.... got to watch a mini movie while laying on the floor, enjoying snacks (like a movie theater experience).... who wouldn't want that?!

After the long waited 22 months, Kiharu is finally calling "OTOUSAN" (daddy). Nori is sure the happiest dad right now. Her sweet voice melts Nori's heart everytime. Looking back, Yoshi made his first Otousan calling around the same age.

Bye grandpa and grandma. Thanks for coming here to spend the wonderful three weeks with us. Can't believe you are already on your way back to Hong Kong. Yoshi & Kiharu have so much fun with you. 105% energy level

It's been a week since the last blog post. It's been busy lately. And Yoshi was sick last weekend with high fever. But now he's back to 105% normal. (it's always good to see his energetic mode, though it comes with loud voice...^_^) Everyday is full of fun in the house. Can't believe how much energy grandparents have with the kids. Grandpa is literally following EVERY steps behind Kiharu, making sure she won't fall or bump into sharp corners (professional bodyguard). I'm really amazed with his energy, I bet ALL OF THEM fall asleep right away every night.

Grandparents have visited here many times, but this is the first time during fall season. It's one of my favorite- fall activities, leaves changing color.....so beautiful. Glad to have grandparents here to enjoy together.

p.s-looking at all Kiharu's photos, can't believe she is not even 2 years old. She seems to be much more understanding about lots of things. She is a very happy little girl, but when she really wants something, she goes her way in doing it (at least she tries).

Tonight at dinner, after only a few bites, she seems to lost interest (very unusual) and focus on the fruit. We kept explaining to her she had to finish rice first, but she refused (happened before). At the end, I even had to put her into her crib, isolating her for a minute. To most people, they probably think I'm over doing it. But if you were there to see, just like grandparents, you would agree Kiharu actually understood most of the explaination, especially through visual demonstration. I know she is not even 2 years old, lots of patience are needed, but teaching has to start somewhere. ......

No no no, this don't happen everyday, and I'm not a tiger mom (for sure). I just know the kids understand if we explain right and wrong, it takes a lot of patience. And even after all the struggle, hugs and kisses fill with lots of love. Can't wait to see their big smiles tomorrow morning... sweet dream my dear Kiharu & Yoshi. xoxoxo

Harvest time

Thank you to Ojiichan's (grandpa) hardwork back in last July, planting vegetable seeds in our garden. After three months, my parents are now here able to harvest for all of us. (Ojiichan, arigatou).

Yoshi is very excited each time when grandparents take him out for harvest. All you need is an empty bowl & a pair of scissors.

Time to help out in washing the vegetables...

Thanks both grandparents for planting seeds and harvesting, otherwise, I doubt if we would ever have a chance to eat such fresh healthy meal....Thank you.

The long waited visit from 公公婆婆 has finally arrived. After having so many visitors this past few months, Yoshi & Kiharu had no problem adapting to them. Yoshi didn't even want to go to school this morning, because he wanted to play with them at home....more fun to come.

Window art

I saw this new Crayola product- Window markers. Probably it's similiar to washable markers. It's a fun thing to do. Yoshi wanted to draw on every window in the house, but I only limited him to the biggest one only. Afterall, I don't want to turn our home into a graffiti house. And if you rub with fingers, the paint come off easily, so it won't be good for Kiharu either. Hopefully these markers will help to ease the upcoming long winter season trapped inside the house.......

"Me Block"

Yoshi's teacher had asked each student (& parent) to make a "Me Block". Basically was to fill the box with photos and things, so the student could make a small presentation/ Q&A in the class. I printed out the photos, then discussed each with Yoshi, and decorated together.

Here are few funny thing during the process:
1) I had a photo of Yoshi's swallon eyes and face right after the peanut allergy. Thinking to put that on the box and let everyone know about it. But he refused to glue that photo or even to just write something about it. He kept saying he doesn't want that photo....perhaps at age 4, he knows what looks good or BAD....

2) We had a baby (2 days old) photo of Yoshi. He kept saying that's NOT him. He said that's Kiharu. I explained to him that's when he was little. But he kept pointing to another recent photo of him and said "see, I look different, it's not me".....

3) (I was pointing to the photo of Nori) "Yoshi, teacher and classmates won't understand when u say "Otousan". So how do you say Otousan in English?".......................... after thinking for a few seconds: "N-O-R-I"

After a busy week, we were slowing down a bit today. Felt like it's been a while since I grabbed the camera & just sat on the driveway to capture the moment. It was fun for them to play outside, enjoying the nice weather (which seems rare lately). And I had fun looking at the kids thru the camera lens- "Yoshi, the dirt digger" & "Kiharu, the shoe queen" (opening the shoe drawers, trying on each pair of shoes, big and small)

A fun non stop week

It has been a very busy week. My friend May and her family came all the way to visit us from Hong Kong. It's always fun to have visitors in the house. Yoshi & Kiharu love all the attention they received. The week was packed with sightseeing, SHOPPING, dining & even visiting Yoshi's school. After they left this morning, Yoshi said "Mama, please play with me & the planes (toys)". I guess someone wishes he was on the plane to Hong Kong also.....

Yoshi was so excited to be back to school. Compare to his little class last year with only 6 students, this year, he has 13 new classmates. I think it will be an adjustment for him, but it will be good preparation for the kindergarten. I look forward to his new school year, I'm excited for him...

Yoshi is at the age very interest in playing board games. Recently, we got him the Chutes & Ladders game, thought it would be a good opportunity to get him familiar with the numbers. What a simple game. But little did I know, this is a "never-ending game". I played with him twice, and both ended without any winners. Just as either one of us was almost to the winning spot, we had to take a long slide down to the bottom, this continued many times, almost as if it's impossible to win.

(No, Kiharu had NO clue about this game, we just pretended to let her turn the dial and be a game player)

One day after dinner, Yoshi asked for a towel to wipe table. I knew he learnt from a kids video program. Since then, it has became his "duty" after each meal. In some way, he's very proud of himself being able to help. I can't wait for Kiharu to grow up more, then maybe I can pass on the vacuuming job to her....^_^

Dinosaurs

One of the highlight visiting Kings Island was the newly open Dinosaur Alive park. All those animated dinosaurs would move and sound (only wish they would actually walk closer....). Don't ask me why Yoshi was wearing sunglasses (maybe he wanted to stay away from dinosaurs). And for Kiharu, she didn't seem to be fear of those giant creatures at all.........

Yoshi's first bumper car ride

This past weekend, we had a fun, relaxing family time. We planned everything around kids. Kings Island amusement park is only 5 mins from our house, but this was only Yoshi's second time visiting. We were there in the evening for about 4 hrs till park closed.

The funniest comment from Nori: "I didn't ride on anything..." ^_^ His highlight was probably the hamburger dinner inside the park, and being the security guard to our stroller while I was either riding or lining up with the kids..... Afterall, me and Nori always said, someday when our kids are old enough to ride roller coaster, we will have to find someone else to ride with them. Nori had past neck injuries and not suitable for roller coaster ride (that's what he said). And for me, let's just say, the last time when I rode on roller coaster (1X yrs ago), I can't even open my eyes, nor did I know how to scream.......

Kiharu had fun watching and riding on train. I have a feeling, she might be the one that force either me or Nori to tempt the unthinkable roller coaster ride many years later......

This is Yoshi's first bumper car ride. This is design for little kids only, so they don't have to step on any pedals. They only have to turn the steering wheels......

Back to just two of them

Now that all the family members have left, the house are slowly back to routines. Yoshi is inviting Kiharu back as his playing buddy. Even though there are small fights here and there, at the end of the day, they know they always have each other. Sometimes after a fight between them, I made both of them say sorry to each other & hug each other (we always take whatever Kiharu said as the words, even though it may sound totally different). Kiharu copies Yoshi's every moves, sound and even farting sound (& smell)....^_^ cute.

p.s- after 3 weeks sleeping with us, Yoshi would still crawl onto our bed these few nights. Last night at 5a.m, he woke me up right next to me (don't know when he came into our room). "Mama, I need to drink water" ...... "Huh?? tomorrow morning then" ....... (few mins later) "Mama, I need to drink water, I'm coughing" (媽媽, 我要飲水,我咳咳) I guess he was desperate to get me out of the bed. And for sure, his brain worked very well early in the morning....

At the end of the 3 weeks stay, we asked the kids what's the best part of the trip, each of them said the SAME thing- the day on the beach (Wasaga Beach, Canada). It's well worth for the drive.

After more than 3 weeks of constant fun and happiness, our house seems too quiet and empty today. I can tell Yoshi really missing everyone. Kiharu was also very attached to me today, perhaps without all the other distractions. Having the girls here, Yoshi was totally occupied everyday, filled with laugh and silliness. He was quiet today without them, no one chase him up and down the house, no one play with him like the kids way, and no one echo with his TV demand.......

Grandparents, aunt Junko, Nana-chan & Yuuki-chan, thanks for coming to spend the fun time with us, we all miss having all of you around, hope we can meet again very soon.

Lately I have been doing a lot of extra clean up, preparing the arrival of grandparents, aunt and cousins from Japan. They will be here tomorrow, for 3 weeks. We are very looking forward to their visit, Yoshi and Kiharu will have lots of fun together. But before that, clean up, clean up..... (but somehow, no one else is moving, except me......)

Board game

At 4 years old, Yoshi is now enjoying the fun of board game. He has the patience and desire to play the game (by the rules). And I love these new family bonding experiences too. Sometimes when we were all in the house, not necessary we would be spending time to do things together. But playing the board games, really is a great bonding moments. (Thanks to my dad who used to play board games with me and my brother when we were little. Now I'm passing that interest to the next generation. ^_^)

Nori even encourages us to "accept" Kiharu as a real player. ^_^ and that actually is great. Suprisingly Kiharu would have the patience to wait for her turn. Of course not the entire game, half way through, she would start walking around. Well, let's say, our last game ended up with "someone's" feet right in the middle of the board, messing up the counting steps.....^_^ (and you might be able to imagine big brother's frustrating reaction.....^_^)

Crocs family

Thanks to Auntie Anna, Kiharu has joined the Crocs family. To be honest, didn't think crocs is suitable for little toddler who is still trying to master the walking skill, but Nori insisted Kiharu has to wear those. I think it's really cute, seeing three of them wearing the same shoes. But I just can't see myself wearing one of those bulky plastic "thing" with holes. (Nori, no need to get me those for x'mas or birthday gift....^_^)

10a.m playing at the water park, that's really early for us. But for the kids, I got to do it. It was actually a lot of fun, we met up with few friends. Yoshi had so much fun, love seeing his laugh. Kiharu had conquered her initial fear of water park experience, but NO to any kind of water splash yet, let's do that one at a time....^_^

Kiharu & Nadiah were wating in the side line.....absolutely had NO interest in getting themselves wet...(or even being splashed)

"Arigatou"

We have been teaching Kiharu words here and there. The first word she said was "gou gou"= brother (Yoshi). She understands a lot of words, but not yet able to repeat. Recently, her new word is "Arigatou" (=thank you), or maybe it sounds more like Ari?????

Tried to keep them occupied while preparing dinner- all you need, a large piece of paper (use both front and back) + crayons.

This was their first time drawing together, Kiharu was laughing about Yoshi's quick sketch work... silly kids....^_^

Same bike

Steel Drum

Last week, Yoshi attended a week long summer Steel Drum session. It was about 1.5 hr every each day (only for a week). He had so much fun. Parents were not allowed inside the classroom. But the last day of the class, we were being invited for a 15 minutes "concert" performance. Yoshi truely loves music. I hope he can join this again someday, but it's far from our house.

Last Saturday, I had secretly invited some of our friends over for a SUPRISE 40th birthday party for Nori. This was planned about a month ago. One of his friend invited him for golf outing in the afternoon, while Nori thought I was meeting up with friends for playdate. While he was out, I took the kids to make many stops, picking up balloons, cake, food.... We had such a short time for all of these & decoration. I was planning 15 mins interval in between all the stops. Yoshi kept wondering if we would ever go home.

The plan went so well (& secret) that Nori truely had a suprise when he walked into the house. How fun!!

(Nori was carrying food inside the bag, I sent him to pick up carry out food after golf, so to make sure everyone arrived before him)

Yes, it's Nori's big 40th birthday today. We took Nori for a tour at the Reds ballpark (baseball stadium). I'm not a baseball fan (at all), but it was fun to do something different with the kids. Now, we just need to get tickets to see the game next time. (can we sit at the VIP session with air conditioning indoor?)

Today we had invited a group of great friends over for lunch. Yoshi, Sarah, Nadiah & Andrew have spent the last 2-3 years together, always had a lot of fun.
Sarah gave this to Yoshi today. "Sarah & Yoshi, with a purple HEART on top, between them". It's so cute....Yoshi's first love letter received. ^_^ Thanks Sarah.

So what did we (Nori) got for Yoshi's birthday this year? ........

(we told Yoshi to cover his eyes while bringing out the gift...he was TOO excited)

A while ago, an electronic store had a funny TV commercial- the parents bought a flat screen TV for their 3 year old son as birthday gift, they were so excited when he opened the gift, because it's actually for them instead.

This wasn't exactly the case for our birthday gift to Yoshi this year, it's truely for his latest favorite hobby. Seeing how much Yoshi loves golf, it's time to replace those plastic golf clubs with the real thing (only for outdoor). Nori had been researching that since few months before Yoshi's birthday. He was just as excited in getting that for Yoshi. Now, they are like father and son team, going to driving range EVERY weekend. Yoshi loves it, Nori loves it even more, because he can "officially" add golf as part of the family schedule activity.

(Maybe we should get a helmet for Kiharu, as she tends to walk around the driving range, interrupting the golfers, being nosey.......)

"C" for curious & "T" for trouble

Did I really say the word "trouble"? oh yes......

Thur the camera lens, Kiharu is such a cute little one. But in real person, her curiosity is BLOOMING to a level of explosion (in simple words- she is a trouble maker!!) She is now at the "climbing stage". She would climb up the sofa, the highchair, dining chair, bed....wherever her two legs can reach. We would tell Yoshi to put his LEGO toys on the dining table, but then very soon, Kiharu would discover it and tried to reach up high by climbing the chair.

If she would just sit on the chairs after climbing, that's fine. But she would crawl on the dining table, or walk around the sofa (like tightrope walking). I'm just physically tired putting her down every time. I tried giving her my (angry) "look", which used to work with Yoshi, now she learns to avoid my eye contact.

I know this is all because of curiosity. Hopefully it's only a stage, and we just have to learn to "deal" with each other. At the end of the day, her cute little smile and hug cover up all her little naughty (dangerous) moves..... xoxoxo.

Looking at Yoshi, can't believe 4 years have gone by so fast. I still remember when I was pregnant with him.....

At 4 years old, he truely enjoys the birthday excitement. At the last day of school (last week), Yoshi was given a birthday hat. It was very special to him, he had to have it by bedside every night. Since then, he kept mentioning about his birthday party. He was just excited to have all his great friends over, and ate birthday cake (I think it's more about singing the birthday song instead).

Yoshi knew today is his birthday. With the bad weather and him recovering from a minor cold, we didn't go anywhere. But Nori came home early to have dinner together, then followed by cake and presents, Yoshi definitely felt very special. He was very appreciative of everything. He's such a great kid. We are so happy for him.

Curious little sister

Unpredictable weather

Lately, the weather is so unpredictable. One minute it could be sunny outside, then very soon followed by thunderstorm and tornado warning. Last night, while having dinner, our electricity power went out. With the black clouds coming in, for precaution, I took the kids down to the basement with a flash light. I immediately transformed myself into supermom, pretending it's fun to hide out (in the dark, with spider net around...yikes...).

We were down there not too long, but Yoshi wouldn't want to go back upstairs, knowing we have no power, and security alarm was beeping. He had no choice but to follow me later on. Our power didn't come back till 1a.m. Everyone is fine, just without power, it really left us nothing to do in the darkness. I think Nori cannot stand a minute without his favorite TV....^_^ My poor breadmachine, it was in the middle of preparing dough (& bread baking) while power shut down. We end up getting a loaf of bread in store...

Well, compare to people who suffered in other states with all these bad weather (or those during Japanese earthquake), our power outrage is NOTHING. It did gave me a glimse of the scary feeling during the disaster. Hope things will get better for everyone else......

Yoshi had been long waiting for this day, it finally came. His birthday is actually this coming Thursday, but we had his party today. Not only did he wake up early, but he even brought his party hat into our bedroom right after he woke up. He was just so excited to have all his friends over.......

After a long night, the clock is about to strike midnight. Although my brain is already in sleep(y) mode, but at least I want to post photos of the kids.

It was a beautiful day, after few days of cold weather, sun is back. We went to the park after lunch, then did gardening work with Yoshi. But the highlight for them, must be the rare shopping after dinner. Since Nori ate out tonight, so I took the kids to the store, walked around the toys dept. They loved pushing those buttons on toys that makes sounds, light and movement....almost as if we all got some retail therapy (window shopping) before bedtime. Sweet dream tonight.....Zzzzzz

P.s- last night, we heard Yoshi struggling in bed, he must be having some sort of nightmare. He said few times "da-me" ("No...No.." in Japanese). So I told Nori "Since Yoshi was saying in Japanese, OBVIOUSLY, it wasn't me that create his stressful dream...wonder who that might be?!" ^_^

Last Friday, we went to the aspargus farm. This was our first time doing it. At the first glance, I didn't see the aspargus on the ground, till a closer look. Yoshi had fun pulling it, except the long aspargus became very short, because he was pulling from the top part. I was just enjoying taking photos under the hot sunny day. Look at Yoshi's harvest....& look at Kiharu's face, I guess she wasn't so sure about group photos...These past few meals, we had aspargus as ingredient. Perhaps because it was hand picked by Yoshi, he was very willing to eat those green vegetables. Perhaps we should visit more other farms nearby.

Side note- at this farm, not only is it "pick your own aspargus", but also "be your own cashier". Basically, after picking the aspargus, you went into this little hut, weigh the aspargus on the scale, then put the money inside this brown box. If you need change, help yourself. This will never exist anywhere else........... (US$2 per LB)

It's weekend

A week gone by so fast, every night, the little time left after kids went to bed, seems to be contributing to leftover housework or preparing the birthday party. So glad another weekend is here again. For me, it means extra help in the house, extra muscles to carry heavy grocery, quality family time.....For Kiharu, it probably means extra person to follow around & hugs..... For Yoshi, it DEFINITELY means GOLF with Otousan!!

Peanut allergy

One week after the emergency doctor visit, blood test result confirmed Yoshi has high peanut allergy. (the test also revealed his has moderate allergy to cats, which shouldn't be any big problem)

For precaution, now I have to carry Epi-pen with me everywhere, including leaving one at school. Basically, this is a medicine to be injected under emergency situation, related to allergy issue.
All our lives (including Nori's), we never have any allergy issue, to this is a whole new education for us. The biggest challenge right now, is the need to remind myself to check on the labels or menus. I need to remember doing that.

Since Yoshi was born, I haven't given him much peanut or peanut butter related food before. Even we did, there wasn't any noticable reaction. So this new incident was a complete shock to us. I've just realized luckily the peanut oil that most restaurant used are fully refined- meaning the protein which could trigger allergic reaction was being removed. No wonder Yoshi is totally fine with his favorite chicken nuggets.

Right now, at least I know Yoshi is not allergic to hazelnut, because he's fine with Nutella chocolate spread which doesn't contain peanut.

He will be visiting allergist very soon, so we will find out more information later. Maybe more test will be needed in the future.

Despite this new problem, he's totally fine. Life as usual, laugh, play, eat and sleep well. we are very lucky that last week incident happened at home, when Nori was in town, when the doctor was still available, and I took the Reese Cup chocolate away immediately after his first stolen bite (instead of letting him finishing it).

The most funny part about this- I have been trying to teach Yoshi to say "I cannot eat peanut, it will make me sick" in both English & Cantonese. And I'm also role playing with him that if he got offered a snack, he needs to check with me before eating. He completely understands "that food" makes him sick and he cannot eat "that", but he kept repeating "I cannot eat CHOCOLATE,.......". In his mind, it's the stolen "chocolate" that made him sick, regardless of what's the content.....^_^ I did have to correct him, so be sure he understand it's more about the peanut. ^_^

Wonder if this fish was being cooked with peanut oil? ^_^
